Unintelligent Design

The basic argument for intelligent design is that the world is so beautiful with so many intricate, perfectly designed systems that it had to be the work of a God. Now, I’m going to say it out front: I believe in evolution. Let the stone throwing commence. Now, what I’m about to say next will get the rest of you who are sitting comfortably in your chairs up and scrambling to find rocks to throw. I also believe that there may have been an intelligent component, in short, intelligent design. Now I see all the confused faces, but let me explain.Let’s assume for the time being for you doubters out there that a God does exist. Many who believe in intelligent design believe that the designer is the Christian God and that He designed each of us. Now lets think practically, is that way really so intelligent? If God is really as intelligent as he must be, would He really go through all the trouble of creating each species one by one. My problem with the current intelligent design theory is simply that it isn’t intelligent. Honestly guys, we’re just not giving God enough credit. In short, the intelligent design guys are saying God really isn’t as smart as they are.

My point is, if God was really intelligent, isn’t it possible that he devised a system (ahem evolution) to do his work for him? Are we really so arrogant that we claim to know all of God’s methods and intentions? Maybe the story of the world being created in six days was a simple metaphor for our ancestors 2000 years ago who at that time still thought the Earth was the center of the universe and that leaving a rotting sandwich out on a table for a few days would produce mice.

God is far more intelligent than you or I. Science is slowly trying to answer these questions using a proven scientific method. Those guys who clamor and shout that science must be wrong because it goes against their existing beliefs aren’t pious: they’re arrogant. I’m sure God has many more mysteries in store for us to discover. It’s time we get to work.

In the end, I can admit that this could all be complete crap. It is only my theory. I can admit I don’t know. These are a few words a couple people might want to try out.

sure, it is completely possible that the “christian” God created the world through darwinian evolution.

it is also possible that God created his creatures to fight and kill each other in order to preserve the most fit of the species.

is that likely? more correctly, is that rational? and most of all, i think you were pretty snide about scientists who are experts in their fields who dont hold to darwin’s theory. there are some scientists (who arent crazy either, they are wellrespected in their community, some of them that is) who dont believe darwin.

so my question is this: have you truly sought the truth, or have you believed what everyone else has told you? i mean from either side? have you believed that there’s a God because some crazy pastor told you? have you believed darwin because some school teacher? why do you believe what you believe?

i dont want to throw stones. but i want to ask questions. are you so thoroughly sure about your beliefs in any area of life that you will follow without a question from yourself?

Hmm. Interesting.. While it may not seem like it has anything relevant to add.. I would like to pose a question often asked by Athiests because I am genuinly interested in your answer. No cheating, your own thoughts. “Can God create a rock so heavy, even he cannot lift it”?
As a side note, I believe in the evolution theory and consider myself a spiritual person, however not religious in the most prescribed to sense. I generally classify myself as a pagan with buddhist philosophies. Pagans, believing more in “God” as the inate life force that exists within everything. So in this way, since evolution was created using a “life force” then a spiritual entity did create it however, not in the commonly accepted terms by many christian religions. In the end however, I believe that at the end of the day we are all praying to/worshipping the same thing and feel that there should be a general respect cross culturaly for this idea.
So.. in that case.. then no design is really “unintelligent”
